Are You Washing Your Beard Wrong? 3 Common Mistakes

  • 3 min read

Washing your beard seems pretty straightforward, right? Get some soap, lather up, rinse it out and go about your day. As easy as this is, we have a few tweaks that will make a noticeable difference in the health of your skin and beard.

Use the right beard wash

Don’t even think about scrubbing that bar of soap on your face. The harsh chemicals in bath soaps – and most shampoos – are too aggressive for the skin on your face and facial hair. Have you ever taken a shower and your skin felt tight or itchy after? It's the soap. Switch to a specially formulated Face + Beard Wash. It will vanquish the grit and grime on your skin and beard without compromising your skin’s pH balance or microbiome. Bonus points for a probiotic wash that helps support your skin’s microbial helpers.

Be careful with heavily fragranced beard washes. f you see “fragrance” listed in the ingredients, that fragrance could consist of a few synthetic chemicals or hundreds of chemicals, and companies in the United States don’t have to tell you what synthetic chemicals they use. Here in the U.S. there are many fragrances in use that are banned in the UK and EU due to safety concerns. These include hormone disruption, male infertility and cancer. That is why we only use all-natural essential oils to impart the scent in our Probiotic Daily Face + Beard Wash. And of course each individual ingredient is clearly listed on the label. (It feels good when you have nothing to hide.)

Use the right water temperature

We all love a steaming hot shower. But if the water is too hot it will dry out your skin, water that’s too cold won’t allow your pores to open. Lukewarm water is the sweet spot.

Over and under washing your face and beard

You should cleanse your face once per day. Those with particularly oily skin can wash twice daily. Overwashing can dry your skin, causing it to produce more oil to compensate. You may then feel the need to wash more leading to a vicious cycle of over washing/excessive oil production that ultimately leads to skin irritation and various other skin conditions.

During the day, grime and pollutants accumulate on your skin, some of which actually speed up the aging process. Remember, the goal is to remove the day’s nastiness without overstriping your skin. If you don’t wash enough, dirt, pollution and other nastiness can accumulate on your skin leading to clogged pores, breakouts and tired, dull looking skin.

As for your beard, wash that bad boy once or twice per week. Like your skin, you don’t want to strip the beard of its natural oils. If you get particularly dirty during the day you should wash your beard as necessary.

When it comes to timing, wash your face at night if you are only washing once per day. This allows you to rinse the day’s grime away. The last thing you want is dirt and pollution marinating your skin overnight. In the morning, simply rinse your face and beard with lukewarm water, towel dry, apply your daily moisturizer and then crush the day.

Bonus Tip: Not using the right products at the right time after washing

Washing, by its very nature, removes some of the natural oils your skin needs to properly function. If the only grooming product you use is a beard wash, you’ll likely notice your beard and skin feeling a bit dry regardless of how gentle the wash. Every person, regardless of facial hair, should use a moisturizer after washing. This helps restore moisture to the skin while reinforcing your skin’s natural barrier against harmful microbes and water loss.

The best time to apply facial moisturizers and beard oils is right after you’re done washing your face. Your face and beard are the cleanest they will be, your pores are open and applying immediately locks in the hydration from the water. Get the most out of your products and don’t wait to apply. If you use both a moisturizer and beard oil, apply the moisturizer first.
