Your skin, the largest organ of your body, is a reflection of your overall health. It requires a myriad of nutrients to repair itself, ward off damage, and maintain its strength and elasticity. The connection between nutrition and skin health is profound, with studies¹ underscoring the impact of diet on skin condition.
1. Vitamins and Antioxidants: Vitamins A, C, and E are pivotal for skin health. Vitamin A is crucial for skin repair and maintenance. Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, plays a key role in collagen synthesis, vital for skin strength and elasticity. Vitamin E, another antioxidant, helps protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals. A diet rich in these vitamins, abundant in fruits and vegetables, directly contributes to healthier, more resilient skin.
2. Healthy Fats: Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are essential for maintaining skin health. These healthy fats help produce the skin's natural oil barrier, critical in keeping the skin hydrated, plumper, and younger-looking. Foods like salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
3. Protein: Adequate protein intake is necessary for the repair and regeneration of skin cells. Collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin firm and elastic, are built with the help of dietary protein.
4. Water: Hydration is key for maintaining skin moisture balance and delivering essential nutrients to the skin cells. It helps in improving the skin's elasticity and reduces signs of dryness and roughness.
Incorporating nutrient-rich foods into your diet can significantly enhance your skin's health, elasticity, and overall appearance.
Here's some of the top foods for healthy skin:
Fatty Fish: Salmon, mackerel, and herring are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for maintaining skin health. Omega-3 fatty acids can help keep skin thick, supple, and moisturized.
Moreover, fish is a great source of high-quality protein, necessary for maintaining the strength and integrity of your skin. Fish also provides zinc, a vital mineral important for regulating inflammation, overall skin health, and the production of new skin cells.
Omega-3s are also linked to healthy beard growth.
Avocados: High in beneficial fats, avocados are rich in vitamins E and C. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that helps protect your skin from oxidative damage, while vitamin C is crucial for healthy skin. Your skin needs vitamin C to create collagen, the main structural protein that keeps your skin strong and healthy.
In addition to skin health, the high concentration of vitamin E in avocados is also believed to help support beard growth.
Walnuts: Walnuts are a good source of essential fatty acids, which are fats that your body cannot make itself. In fact, they're richer than most other nuts in both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
A diet too high in omega-6 fats may promote inflammation, including inflammatory conditions of your skin like psoriasis. Omega-3 fats reduce inflammation in your body, including in your skin.
Sweet Potatoes: Beta-carotene, found in plants, functions as provitamin A, which means it can be converted into vitamin A in your body. Beta-carotene is found in oranges and vegetables such as carrots, spinach, and sweet potatoes.
Sweet potatoes are an excellent source — one 1/2-cup (100-gram) serving of baked sweet potato contains enough beta-carotene to provide more than six times the daily value of vitamin A. Carotenoids like beta-carotene keep your skin healthy by acting as a natural sunblock.
Bell Peppers: Like sweet potatoes, bell peppers are an excellent dietary source of beta-carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A. They're also one of the best sources of vitamin C, necessary for creating the protein collagen which keeps skin firm and strong.
A single cup (149 grams) of chopped red bell pepper contains the equivalent of 134% of the daily value for vitamin C.
Broccoli: Broccoli is full of many vitamins and minerals important for skin health, including zinc, vitamin A, and vitamin C. It also contains lutein, a carotenoid that works like beta-carotene. Lutein protects your skin from oxidative damage, which can cause your skin to become dry and wrinkled.
But broccoli florets also pack a special compound called sulforaphane, which boasts some impressive potential benefits. It may even have anti-cancer effects, including on some types of skin cancer.
Tomatoes: Tomatoes are a great source of vitamin C and contain all of the major carotenoids, including lycopene. These carotenoids protect your skin from sun damage and may help prevent wrinkling. Because tomatoes contain all of the major carotenoids, they're an excellent food for maintaining healthy skin.
Consider pairing carotenoid-rich foods like tomatoes with a source of fat, such as cheese or olive oil. Fat increases your absorption of carotenoids.
Dark Chocolate: If you need one more reason to eat chocolate, here it is: The effects of cocoa on your skin are pretty phenomenal.
After 6–12 weeks of consuming a cocoa powder high in antioxidants each day, participants in one study experienced thicker, more hydrated skin. Their skin was also less rough and scaly, less sensitive to sunburn, and had better blood flow — which brings more nutrients to your skin.
Just as the right nutrients can enhance skin health, poor nutrition can exacerbate skin problems. Diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates (the typical western diet) can trigger a cascade of physiological effects that may lead to skin inflammation and acne. Similarly, excessive alcohol consumption and dehydration can lead to skin dryness and premature aging.
While nutrition forms the foundation of skin health, the right skincare products are crucial in maintaining skin's appearance and vitality.
1. Cleansing: Start your day by cleansing your face with a gentle, hydrating cleanser like Cleanse: Daily Face + Beard Wash. It's essential to remove overnight oil buildup, sweat, and dead skin cells. Cleanse is designed to clean without stripping your skin (and facial hair) of its natural oils.
2. Moisturizing: After cleansing, apply a moisturizer like Hydrate: Daily Facal + Beard Moisturizer to help your skin stay hydrated throughout the day. Hydrate contains hyaluronic acid, which holds 1000 times its weight in water, thereby retaining moisture in the skin.
3. Sun Protection: Always finish your morning routine with a layer of sunscreen. UV rays can be incredibly harmful to your skin, causing premature aging and increasing the risk of skin cancer.
4. Night Routine: Your skin's needs at night are different. It's time for repair and regeneration. After cleansing, apply a night cream rich in nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E to support your skin's natural repair process. Hydrate is wonderful because it fills both a morning and night time role.
1. How does nutrition affect my skin health?
Nutrition plays a pivotal role in maintaining the health and appearance of your skin. Your skin, being the largest organ of your body, requires a variety of nutrients to repair itself, protect against damage, and maintain its elasticity and hydration. Diets rich in vitamins (like A, C, and E), omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants help in reinforcing the skin’s barrier, improving its hydration, and protecting it from environmental damage. Conversely, poor nutrition can lead to issues like inflammation, acne, and premature aging.
2. Can dietary changes improve skin conditions like acne or eczema?
Yes, dietary changes can influence skin conditions. For instance, diets high in refined sugars and unhealthy fats may exacerbate acne by triggering inflammation and increasing oil production in the skin.
On the other hand, consuming anti-inflammatory foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins can help manage skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis by reducing inflammation and supporting skin repair. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional or a dermatologist for personalized advice, especially for chronic or severe conditions.
3. What are some key foods I should include in my diet for better skin health?
To promote skin health, focus on including the following in your diet:
4. How do skincare products complement the effects of a healthy diet on skin health?
While a healthy diet lays the foundation for healthy skin, skincare products provide additional, targeted support. High-quality skincare products, like those from stubble + 'stache, can offer protection, hydration, and nutrients directly to the skin.
For instance, products containing hyaluronic acid can enhance hydration, while those with antioxidants like vitamin C can provide added protection against environmental damage. It's about creating a balance—nourishing your skin from the inside with a healthy diet and from the outside with well-formulated skincare products.
5. Is it necessary to use supplements for skin health, or can a balanced diet suffice?
A balanced diet is usually sufficient to meet the nutritional needs for healthy skin. However, in certain cases, such as dietary restrictions, health conditions, or increased nutritional requirements, supplements may be beneficial.
For instance, omega-3 supplements can be helpful for individuals who don't consume fish. It's important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any supplements, as they can advise you based on your specific health needs and ensure that the supplements won't interact with any medications you might be taking.

]]>Your beard hair color is determined by two types of melanin: eumelanin (responsible for black and brown shades) and pheomelanin (responsible for red and yellow shades).
The specific type and amount of melanin present in your hair follicles dictate the color of your hair. This process is orchestrated by your genes, with the MC1R gene playing a particularly pivotal role in determining whether eumelanin or pheomelanin dominates.
Genetics is like nature's lottery, and it's the ultimate determinant of your hair color.
Each person carries two copies of every gene, one from each parent. The MC1R gene is known for its influence on red hair and is often referred to as the red hair gene. Or in this case, the red beard gene.
If you inherit two mutated versions of the MC1R gene, you're likely to have red hair and a ginger beard. However, carrying just one copy of this mutated gene can result in unexpected ginger strands in your beard, even if your head hair is dark hair or blond hair
Your beard and head hair are not as closely related as you might think. The hair follicles in different parts of your body respond differently to hormonal changes, which can lead to varying colors and textures.
Androgens, a group of hormones that includes testosterone, play a significant role in beard growth and can affect the pigment production in beard hair follicles differently than scalp hair.
So why do guys get red in their beard? Finding red hairs in your beard can be surprising, especially if you don't identify as a redhead.
This phenomenon is primarily due to the incomplete dominance of the MC1R gene.
Even if one of your MC1R genes is mutated, it can be enough to cause a noticeable amount of red in your beard. This genetic trait is a fascinating display of your unique genetic makeup and the complex inheritance patterns that contribute to our diverse appearances.
The MC1R gene is one of the key players in the world of hair color. It's responsible for producing a protein that controls the type of melanin produced in your hair follicles. The mutation in the MC1R gene can lead to a higher proportion of pheomelanin, giving rise to red pigments.
Interestingly, this gene's expression can vary, leading to a full head of red hair, a ginger beard, or even sporadic ginger strands in your beard.
While genetics is the primary factor in determining your beard color, other elements can contribute to color variance. Age, hormonal changes, environmental factors, and even stress can influence the pigmentation of your beard over time. It's not uncommon for men to notice their beard hair changing color or becoming more variegated as they age.
No matter the color of your beard, proper care is essential for maintaining its health and appearance. At stubble + 'stache, we understand that each beard is unique and deserves the best. Here are some top tips for keeping your ginger-tinted or multicolored beard in top condition:
1. Keep It Clean: Regular washing helps remove dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. Use a gentle beard wash like the Cleanse: Face and Beard Wash, which cleans without stripping away natural oils while supporting healthy barrier function.
2. Hydrate and Condition: A daily facial moisturizer like Hydrate: Daily Face + Beard Moisturizer helps keep both your skin and beard moisturized while reducing beard itch, flakes and premature aging.
3. Soften and Protect: A great beard oil, such as Soften: Face + Beard Oil, will not only soften your ginger beard it will also add subtle shine. Soft, well cared for facial hair is less prone to breakage and more comfortable to the touch.
4. Style with Care: For styling, use a gentle product that provides hold without stiffness. Groom: Probiotic Beard Balm is perfect for keeping those stray hairs in check while also nourishing your beard.
5. Regular Trims: Even if you're growing it out, regular trims are crucial for a healthy-looking beard. Trimming gets rid of split ends while maintain your desired shape.
The presence of ginger in your beard, whether in abundance or as sporadic strands, is a testament to the complex and fascinating world of genetics and your family history.
It's a characteristic to be embraced, a sign of the rich genetic tapestry that makes you you. With the right care and the proper beard products, your beard, regardless of its color, can be a statement of style and personality.
Before we dive into age specifics, it is important to understand the fundamental drivers of beard growth. Some of these we can control, others we cannot.
Genetics determine the number of hair follicles a person has, including those for beard hair. The density and distribution of hair follicles are largely determined by genetic factors inherited from your parents. These factors influence not only the number of follicles but also their responsiveness to hormones like testosterone, which affects beard growth and density. Thus, the ability to grow a thick or full beard is significantly influenced by one's genetic makeup.
Testosterone, along with its derivative dihydrotestosterone (DHT), plays a pivotal role in beard growth. These hormones are responsible for kickstarting the beard growth process during puberty and maintaining it throughout life. Testosterone stimulates the hair follicles, transforming the soft, fine vellus hair into the coarser, darker terminal hair that forms the beard.
DHT, in particular, is critical for initiating and maintaining facial hair growth. However, the sensitivity of hair follicles to these hormones varies among individuals, explaining why some men grow thicker beards than others. It's a complex interplay between genetics, hormone levels, and the body's response to these hormones that ultimately determines the characteristics of your beard. This is why some guys with “low” testosterone can still grow amazingly thick and full beards and some men with “high” testosterone struggle.
A balanced diet rich in vitamins (like Biotin, Vitamins A, C, E), minerals (such as Zinc and Iron), and protein plays a crucial role in promoting healthy hair growth, including your beard. Foods like eggs, nuts, leafy greens, lean meats, and dairy products are excellent for supporting hair health.
Regular exercise boosts overall health and improves blood circulation, which can positively affect hair growth by delivering more nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles. Additionally, weight training can increase your testosterone levels which positively impact beard growth.
Conversely, certain factors can negatively impact beard growth. Poor nutrition, stress, lack of sleep, and smoking can all inhibit beard growth. A high stress lifestyle can particularly take a toll, as stress hormones like cortisol can adversely affect testosterone levels and, consequently, beard growth. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and a healthy lifestyle are key to promoting not just a healthy beard, but overall well-being.
Now that we have the fundamentals, let’s dive into the age specifics!
It seems like there is always one guy in high school with a full beard that would make any man envious. Just like that one 7’ tall guy at school, this is not the norm! So if you are in high school and struggling to grow your face fur, there is not need to worry. Your beard is just getting started. This ramp up stage typically lasts until your early 20s.
During these years, genetics play a pivotal role in determining how your beard will develop. You might notice patchy areas or uneven growth, which is entirely normal. The key during this phase is patience.
Your body is still adjusting to the changes brought on by puberty, including fluctuating hormone levels. To support your beard's development, focus on a healthy lifestyle. A diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals can boost hair growth. And while a healthy lifestyle promotes better hair growth, it won't override genetic factors.
Proper skin care is crucial. Gentle cleansing and moisturizing can provide a healthy foundation for hair growth. Avoid over-trimming or using harsh products that could damage your developing beard.
At this stage you likely won’t need a beard oil but should definitely be using a beard friendly moisturizer like HYDRATE that supports healthy skin and beard growth without clogging your pores…you’ve got enough acne to worry about.
It is also important to use a pH balanced cleanser like CLEANSE that properly cleans your face without over-drying which can lead to a vicious cycle of excess oil production and breakouts.
Your mid-20s to 30s are often considered the golden years for beard growth. As a matter of fact, most men don’t hit peak beard growth until their early to mid thirties. This is when testosterone, the hormone primarily responsible for facial hair growth, peaks. You'll likely notice your beard becoming fuller and more robust.
This is the perfect time to experiment with different beard styles and find what suits you best.
Establish a beard care routine that includes regular washing, exfoliating, and and moisturizing to keep your beard and the underlying skin in top condition. We’ve created a skincare line specifically designed for men with facial hair that takes all the guess work out of your grooming routine. You can learn more about our beard care products here.
Grooming tools like a good quality trimmer, a boar bristle brush, and scissors are essential for maintaining the shape and health of your beard.
In your 60s and beyond, the rate of beard growth might slow down further, and the texture can change, becoming coarser or wirier. This is partly due to decreased sebum production, leading to drier hair, and changes in the hair follicles themselves.
At this stage, comfort and health should be your priority. Opt for softer grooming tools to accommodate more sensitive skin. Keeping your beard and skin hydrated is more important than ever. If you prefer to keep the grays at bay, choose gentle, natural coloring products that are kind to your skin and hair.
Growing a beard is a personal and evolving journey unique to every man. From the first signs of facial hair in your teens to the distinguished look of a mature beard, each phase of growth brings its own challenges and rewards. Embrace each stage, care for your beard with patience and dedication, and enjoy the transformation. Remember, your beard is a reflection of your life's journey – wear it proudly!

For over ten years, my beard has been a part of my identity, a constant companion that has seen me through the special operations community, loss and ultimately starting a men's skincare business.
Today, I embark on a unique adventure: showcasing the impact of every beard guard length, from a #8 guard down to a clean-shaven look. This guide is more than about beard trimming; it's about embracing change and personal growth.
As I begin with the #8 guard, there's a mix of emotions. This guard represents the comfort zone, a familiar territory where the beard's fullness and rugged charm are still very much present. It trims just enough to give a tidy appearance while retaining the essence of a full beard.
It's perfect for those who want a neat look without sacrificing the beard's majesty. Using the #8 guard is like taking a gentle first step towards change – noticeable yet reassuringly subtle.
Or, if you are not looking for change, it is a great way to clean up a slightly unruly beard.
The journey from #7 to #4 is an exploration of versatility. Each guard brings a new look, a new feeling.
With #7 and #6, I start to see a distinct difference, the beard begins to shape my face differently, more defined, more intentional.
The #5 and #4 guards are where the transformation becomes more pronounced. These lengths are ideal for those seeking a balance – the beard is still there, but it's more polished, more refined. This range is where you can experiment with styles, finding that sweet spot between ruggedness and sophistication.
Transitioning to guards #3 to #1, I enter uncharted waters. The #3 guard brings a sharpness and neatness that's strikingly different from the fuller lengths. It's a length that demands attention, showcasing the contours of the face in a new light.
Dropping to #2, the beard becomes an accent, a detail that complements rather than dominates.
Finally, with #1, it's a minimalist's dream – subtle, sleek, and understated. This stage is about bold choices and embracing a more radical change in appearance.
Using the razor is the most poignant moment of this journey. It's not just about removing the remaining stubble; it's about saying goodbye to a part of myself that's been there for a decade.
The clean-shaven face in the mirror is both familiar and new. It's a canvas reset, a chance to rediscover myself. This final step is a powerful statement about change and personal evolution,
This beard trimming journey has been a path of self-discovery. Each guard length revealed a new aspect of my personality, from the ruggedness of a full beard to the polished sophistication of shorter lengths, and finally, the raw openness of a clean-shaven face.
Why did I shave my beard? Part of it was for this video. I've always wondered what different guards would do to my beard.
The other part, well, it is more personal. I was fortunate enough to participate in a healing psychedelic retreat for Special Operations combat veterans. That is what finally inspired me to do this.
I'll talk more about the experience in later posts but if you are suffering or know anyone who is, I cannot recommend professionally administered "plant medicine" enough. I you are interested, please check out the Heroic Hearts Project.
I hope this guide inspires you to explore the many facets of your personality through your beard style. Whether you're trimming for the first time or are a seasoned beard enthusiast, remember, it's not just about the beard. It's about who you become in the process.
Hydrate: Daily Facial + Beard Moisturizer
Cleanse: Daily Face + Beard Wash
Exfoliate: Charcoal Sugar Scrub
Beard oil is an essential tool in maintaining a healthy, groomed beard. It's a mix of essential and carrier oils that keep your beard hydrated, reduce itching, and leave it smelling fresh. But not all beard oils are created equal. Look for powerful ingredients like jojoba oil, argan, buriti fruit oil, baobab seed oil. You can find all these ingredients and more in the award-winning beard oil Soften: Hydrating Face + Beard Oil
The key to using beard oil is to start with a clean, towel-dried beard. A few pumps of oil are enough for most beards. You just need to rub it into your hands and gently work it through your beard, from roots to tips.
In the face-off of beard balm vs oil, it's important to understand what each brings to the table. Beard balm is a blend of oils, butters, and sometimes beeswax or heavier synthetic waxes. It provides hold for styling, nourishes the beard and skin, and helps shape your beard. Groom is our favorite beard balm and provides essential nourishment to your beard while providing light to medium hold. It is an excellent beard balm for daily use.
The application is simple. Scoop out a small amount of balm, warm it up by rubbing it between your hands, and apply it through your beard just like you would with oil. It's best used after a shower when your beard is clean and your pores are open.
So, what's the difference between beard oil and beard balm? The main difference lies in their purposes. Beard oil is mainly used to condition and soften the beard and skin underneath, while beard balm provides a bit more hold for styling purposes. Certain beard balms, like Groom, are also great for men who want to soften and condition their beards but don't want to use an oil.
When it comes to the dilemma of 'beard oil or balm first', the answer depends on your personal preference and beard needs. If your beard is in the early growth stages, start with a beard-friendly daily facial moisturizer like Hydrate. Then add in a beard oil as you move past the stubble phase. As it grows and becomes unruly, adding a beard balm to your routine will help keep things in line.
If you're still asking 'can I use beard oil and balm together', the answer is yes! Using beard oil and beard balm together can actually maximize your beard's health and appearance. The oil moisturizes, and the balm styles and further conditions.
Timing is crucial in the 'beard oil vs balm' debate. If you're using both products, beard oil should come first to condition the beard and skin. Then, apply beard balm to seal in the moisture and provide hold.
Both beard oil and beard balm have their unique benefits. While beard oil provides hydration, beard balm offers hold and style. It's not a question of 'beard balm vs beard oil', but rather how these two can work together to give you the ultimate beard experience.
Neither is universally better. It depends on your beard type and personal preferences.
Yes, similar to oil and balm, you can use beard oil and butter together.
It depends. A high quality daily face + beard moisturizer like Hydrate is a fast absorbing, non-greasy anti-aging moisturizer that tackles both your skin and beard needs. "Normal" Beard lotion is usually thicker and used for deep hydration and may clog your pores as they are not designed to be used outside of your beard. While beard oil is lighter and used for daily conditioning.
Using all three together can lead to a comprehensive beard care routine: wash for cleansing, oil for moisturizing, and balm for styling.
It really depends on the specific product since there is so much variation between products but the main difference is that oil softens and conditions and balm offers additional styling hold.
]]>If you've ever pondered, "How to use beard balm," then you've come to the right place. This comprehensive guide will provide you with all the necessary information. You will be a beard-balm-using pro in no time!
Before we plunge into the specifics, let's figure out, "What is Beard Balm?" Think of beard balm as a leave-in conditioner for your beard, designed to nourish, moisturize, and soften your beard hairs while providing some degree of hold.
So, what does beard balm do, you might wonder? Aside from the previously mentioned benefits, it also helps tame unruly beards, providing a neat and polished look. In addition, the balm creates a barrier that aids in locking in moisture, providing long-lasting hydration to your beard.
Let's dive into the nitty-gritty of how to use beard balm. The application is simple:
Can I use beard balm on stubble? Yes, you certainly can! It can help soften the stubble, keep the underlying skin moisturized, and make your stubble journey more comfortable. Just make sure you use the right type of beard balm. Some thicker balms can clog pores and lead to nasty breakouts. If this is a concern, Groom: Hydrating Probiotic Beard Balm is your best bet.
When it comes to beard balm vs oil, it can be confusing. Beard oil primarily moisturizes and conditions, whereas beard balm offers an added benefit: the hold. It allows you to style your beard, keeping stray hairs in check.
Should I use beard balm or beard oil? It's a common dilemma. Here's a simple rule: If you're looking for a light moisturizer, beard oil would be your best bet. However, if you want both moisturization and style control, beard balm is the way to go. That being said, not all beard balms are created equal. Some use petroleum derived ingredients that provide super strong hold but don’t provide much in the way of conditioning.
Are you wondering if you can use beard balm and other beard products? Absolutely! For best results, you can pair your beard balm with a quality beard wash and a daily face + beard moisturizer like Hydrate. You can also pair it with a softening beard oil. The beard wash will cleanse, the moisturizer will nourish and fight aging, the oil will soften, and the balm will provide hold and additional conditioning.
Knowing what the best beard balm ingredients are can help you make informed decisions. Look for natural ingredients like beeswax (for hold), shea butter (for softening and moisturizing), and essential oils (for fragrance and additional benefits).
If you care about your hormones and hormone disruption, stay away from any beard balm with “fragrance” listed on the ingredient list. This means they use synthetic fragrance chemicals (instead of all natural essential oils) in their formula. And while not all fragrance chemicals are bad, there are a number of chemicals that are legal in the USA but banned elsewhere because of their harmful effects. Unfortunately, companies are not legally required to list all the chemicals in their fragrance so it is impossible to know if the blend is safe or not.
Speaking of excellent beard balm, allow me to introduce you to Groom: Hydrating Probiotic Hair + Beard Balm. Infused with the goodness of probiotics and naturally hydrating ingredients, it promises to deliver all that your beard needs in one product. Plus, it's perfect for any stage of beard growth, from stubble to a full-blown beard. Don't take my word for it, though; give it a try here.
Using beard balm can drastically improve your beard game. It's a simple tool with far-reaching benefits that can turn even the most unruly beard into a well-kept masterpiece. So, the next time you ponder, "how to use beard balm?" remember this guide, and you'll be all set.

In the world of skincare, there are countless myths and misconceptions, especially when it comes to men's skincare. This article aims to debunk five common men's skincare myths and provide accurate information to help you make informed decisions about your skin's health.
Contrary to popular belief, men's skin requires just as much care and attention as women's. Men face daily exposure to dirt, sweat, and environmental pollutants, which can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and premature aging. A proper skincare routine can help combat these issues and maintain healthy skin.
A basic skincare routine for men consists of cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and using sunscreen. Incorporating these steps into your daily regimen can significantly improve your skin's health and appearance.
While soap may seem like a convenient and cost-effective option for cleansing your face, it can actually strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Soaps typically have a high pH level, which can disrupt the skin's natural pH balance and cause further harm.
Using a facial cleanser specifically formulated for your skin type helps maintain the skin's pH balance, removes dirt and impurities without causing irritation, and keeps your skin moisturized. Look for a gentle cleanser that is free from harsh chemicals and fragrances.
Regardless of gender, everyone needs sun protection. Sun exposure can lead to premature aging, sunburn, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Men are not exempt from these risks and should incorporate sunscreen into their daily skincare routine.
Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. This will protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Make sure to apply sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
Although acne is often associated with teenagers, it can affect men of any age. Adult acne can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, poor diet, and inadequate skincare.
Men suffering from adult acne should consult a dermatologist to determine the root cause and create a tailored treatment plan. Options can include over-the-counter products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, prescription medications, and lifestyle changes.
The price of a skincare product doesn't necessarily determine its effectiveness. Instead, focus on the ingredients and their concentrations. High-quality, active ingredients are more important than the price tag. With the growth of men’s skincare, you can find a $30 - $40 facial moisturizer that is just as, if not more effective then the $150 - $200 brands.
Do your research and read product reviews to find affordable skincare products that deliver results. You may be surprised to find that many budget-friendly options can be just as effective as their more expensive counterparts.
Q: How often should men exfoliate their skin?
A: Men should exfoliate their skin 1-3 times per week, depending on their skin type and sensitivity. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation and damage the skin's barrier.
Q: Can men use skincare products formulated for women?
A: Generally, yes. However, it is essential to choose products based on your specific skin type and concerns rather than gender. Some products may be more suitable for men's thicker skin and facial hair.
Q: Is it necessary to use a separate moisturizer and sunscreen?
A: While some moisturizers contain SPF, it is usually not enough for adequate sun protection. It is best to use a separate broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 for optimal protection.
Q: What are some lifestyle changes that can improve men's skin health?
A: Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, getting adequate sleep, and managing stress can all contribute to improved skin health.
Q: How can I determine my skin type?
A: Pay attention to how your skin feels throughout the day. If it feels tight and dry, you likely have dry skin. If it becomes oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), you have combination skin. Oily skin produces excess oil all over, while sensitive skin is prone to redness and irritation. A dermatologist can also help determine your skin type and recommend appropriate products.
]]>You've probably heard the term "beard balm" thrown around, but what does beard balm do, really? Fear not, my bearded friends, for we are about to unravel the mystery of beard balms and their benefits.
Beard balm is a grooming product specifically designed to nourish, moisturize, and style your beard. It's a blend of natural oils, butters, and waxes that provides essential nutrients to keep your beard looking and feeling its best.

Exfoliators are skincare products designed to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. These products come in various forms, including physical exfoliants like scrubs and brushes, and chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).
Exfoliating isn't just for women. Men can reap the benefits too! Here's why men need to exfoliate:
Absolutely! Beards can trap dirt, oil, and dead skin cells, leading to itchiness and flakiness. Exfoliating your beard area helps keep it clean and reduces irritation. A product like Exfoliate: Probiotic Face + Beard Charcoal Sugar Scrub is perfect for men with beards, as it's designed to exfoliate both the skin and beard without causing any damage.
The best time to exfoliate is before shaving. Exfoliating beforehand removes dead skin cells and helps lift the hair away from the skin, allowing for a closer and smoother shave. It also reduces the chances of razor bumps and ingrown hairs.
Here are some tips on how to exfoliate properly:
The frequency of exfoliation depends on your skin type and the product you're using. In general, it's recommended to exfoliate 1-3 times per week. For sensitive skin, start with once a week and adjust as needed. Remember, over-exfoliating can cause irritation and damage your skin's natural barrier.
Here's a list of some top face exfoliators for men:
Remember, it's essential to find an exfoliator that suits your specific skin type and concerns. Exfoliate: Probiotic Face + Beard Charcoal Sugar Scrub is a versatile option that works well for various skin types, including men with beards.
Exfoliation is an essential part of a well-rounded skincare routine for men. Incorporating a suitable exfoliating product, like the Exfoliate, can lead to smoother, healthier skin and a better-looking beard. Remember to exfoliate gently and consistently, and always follow up with a moisturizer like Hydrate: Daily Probiotic Facial + Beard Moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and protected.
A: It's not recommended to use a body exfoliator on your face, as body exfoliators are typically more abrasive and can be too harsh for the delicate facial skin. Instead, opt for a facial exfoliator designed specifically for the face, like the Exfoliate: Probiotic Face + Beard Charcoal Sugar Scrub.
Q2: Can I exfoliate if I have acne-prone skin?A: Yes, you can exfoliate if you have acne-prone skin, but it's essential to choose the right exfoliator. Look for a product with salicylic acid (a BHA), as it can penetrate deep into the pores to remove dead skin cells and reduce inflammation. Be gentle when exfoliating, and don't overdo it, as over-exfoliating can irritate the skin and worsen acne.
Q3: Is it okay to exfoliate every day?A: For most people, daily exfoliation is not necessary and can even be harmful to the skin. Over-exfoliating can cause irritation, redness, and damage the skin's natural barrier. It's generally recommended to exfoliate 1-3 times per week, depending on your skin type and the exfoliator you're using.
Q4: How long does it take to see results from exfoliating?A: The results from exfoliating can vary depending on your skin type, the exfoliator you're using, and how consistently you exfoliate. In general, you may start to see improvements in your skin's texture and appearance after just one or two exfoliating sessions. For more noticeable, long-term results, be sure to exfoliate consistently as part of your skincare routine.
Q5: Can I exfoliate if I have sensitive skin?A: Yes, you can exfoliate if you have sensitive skin, but it's crucial to choose a gentle exfoliator and to exfoliate less frequently. Look for products specifically designed for sensitive skin or those with mild exfoliating ingredients like lactic acid or fine sugar granules. Start by exfoliating once a week and adjust the frequency based on how your skin reacts. Always follow up with a soothing, hydrating moisturizer after exfoliating to help maintain your skin's natural barrier.

In the world of skincare, two powerhouses reign supreme: niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. Both have gained popularity for their unique benefits, but how do they compare? In this article, we'll dive deep into the world of niacinamide vs hyaluronic acid, exploring their differences, benefits, and how they can work together to transform your skin.
Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a water-soluble vitamin that offers a range of benefits for the skin. It's an essential nutrient, meaning our bodies cannot produce it, and we must obtain it from food or topical application.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, primarily in the skin, connective tissue, and eyes. It's a powerful humectant, meaning it can attract and retain moisture, making it an excellent hydrator for the skin.
When it comes to deciding between hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, it's important to remember that each ingredient offers unique benefits for the skin. The choice between the two largely depends on your specific skincare concerns and goals.
For those struggling with acne, inflammation, or excess oil production, niacinamide may be the better option. On the other hand, if your primary concern is dryness, dehydration, or aging skin, hyaluronic acid could be the way to go.
While both hyaluronic acid and niacinamide offer unique benefits, they can also be used together for a powerful skincare combination. When used in tandem, these ingredients can provide comprehensive care for various skin concerns.
For example, niacinamide can help reduce inflammation and control oil production, while hyaluronic acid provides deep hydration, combating dryness and signs of aging. The result is a balanced, healthy complexion with improved texture and tone.
Furthermore, combining these two ingredients can actually enhance their effectiveness. Niacinamide can help to strengthen the skin's barrier function, which in turn, allows hyaluronic acid to work more effectively at maintaining optimal hydration levels. The result is a synergistic relationship that benefits the overall health and appearance of your skin.
Now that you know the power of these two skincare superstars, you might be wondering how you can incorporate both into your routine. Look no further than Hydrate: Daily Probiotic Facial + Beard Moisturizer by stubble + 'stache.
This innovative, dual-purpose facial moisturizer features both niacinamide and hyaluronic acid in its formula, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of both ingredients in a single step. In addition to these powerhouse ingredients, Hydrate also contains soothing aloe vera, antioxidant-rich green tea extract, and other nourishing components to provide a comprehensive solution for all your skincare needs.
Whether you're looking to control oil, reduce inflammation, or provide deep hydration to your skin, Hydrate: Daily Probiotic Facial + Beard Moisturizer has you covered.
When it comes to niacinamide vs hyaluronic acid, the ultimate decision lies in your individual skincare concerns and goals. While both ingredients offer unique benefits, they can also work together to provide comprehensive care for your skin.
By incorporating products like stubble & stache's Hydrate, which contain both niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, you can enjoy the best of both worlds and achieve a healthy, radiant complexion.
Remember that skincare is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It's essential to listen to your skin's needs and tailor your routine accordingly. With the right combination of ingredients, you can pave the way for your best skin yet.

A well-groomed beard not only looks great but also contributes to the overall health of your skin. To keep your skin healthy under your beard, follow these essential skincare steps:
When it comes to beard skincare, selecting the right products is crucial since there are very few skincare products designed for men with facial hair. Consider the following:
In addition to following a proper skincare routine, consider these tips for maintaining a healthy beard:
How often should I wash my beard?
Generally, you should wash your beard 1 – 2 times per week a gentle beard wash like Cleanse. However, if you have particularly dirty job or work up a sweat daily, you can wash your face everyday if needed.
Can I use regular shampoo on my beard?
It's best to avoid using regular shampoo on your beard, as it can be too harsh and strip your skin and facial hair of their natural oils. Instead, opt for a gentle beard wash or facial cleanser designed specifically for facial hair.
What's the difference between beard oil and beard balm?
Beard oil is a lightweight, liquid moisturizer that helps hydrate the skin and beard, while beard balm is a thicker, waxy product that provides additional hold and styling benefits. Both can be used to moisturize and condition your beard, but beard balm is better suited for longer or unruly facial hair.
How can I prevent ingrown hairs under my beard?
To prevent ingrown hairs, exfoliate your skin 1-2 times a week using a gentle facial scrub or exfoliating brush. This helps remove dead skin cells, which can trap hair and cause ingrown hairs. Additionally, make sure to shave properly, using a sharp razor and shaving in the direction of hair growth.
Do I need to use both beard oil and beard balm?
It depends on your personal preferences and the length or texture of your beard. If you have a shorter beard, beard oil alone may be sufficient for moisturizing and conditioning. However, if you have a longer or unruly beard, you might benefit from using beard balm for added hold and styling control. You can also use a combination of both products for optimal results.

The skin around the eyes is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of the face, making it more susceptible to aging, puffiness, and dark circles. Eye creams are specifically formulated to address these concerns by providing hydration, nourishment, and protection. They can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, and brighten dark circles. By incorporating an eye cream into your skincare routine, you can keep your under eye area looking youthful and healthy.
Selecting the right eye cream is crucial for the best results. Here are some factors to consider when choosing an eye cream:
Ingredients: Look for eye creams that contain effective ingredients known to target undereye concerns. Some powerful ingredients to look for include:
Skin type: Consider your skin type when choosing an eye cream. Opt for a lightweight formula if you have oily skin, while a more hydrating and nourishing cream may be suitable for dry skin.
Specific concerns: Choose an eye cream that addresses your specific concerns, such as dark circles, puffiness, or wrinkles.
For the best results, keep the following tips in mind:
Incorporating men's eye cream into your skincare routine is an essential step for men who want to maintain a youthful and healthy appearance. By selecting the right eye cream and applying it correctly, you can effectively address common concerns like wrinkles, dark circles, and puffiness. Remember to be consistent in your application, store the cream properly, and be patient for the best results. By prioritizing under eye care, you can put your best face forward and boost your confidence.
Can I use my regular face moisturizer as an eye cream?
While you can use a face moisturizer around the eyes, it may not be as effective as a product specifically designed for the delicate under eye area. Eye creams contain targeted ingredients that address common concerns such as wrinkles, dark circles, and puffiness.
Is it necessary to use an eye cream if I'm in my 20s?
It's never too early to start using an eye cream. Incorporating it into your skincare routine in your 20s can help prevent early signs of aging and keep the eye area looking youthful and healthy.
How long does it take for an eye cream to show results?
The time it takes to see results from an eye cream can vary depending on the individual and the product's ingredients. However, it typically takes several weeks to notice significant improvements.
Can I use an eye cream if I have sensitive skin or allergies?
Yes, there are eye creams available for sensitive skin and those with allergies. Look for products with gentle, hypoallergenic ingredients, and avoid those with fragrances, parabens, or other known irritants. It's always a good idea to perform a patch test before applying any new product to your face.
Should I apply eye cream before or after my face moisturizer?
Apply your eye cream before your face moisturizer to ensure that the targeted ingredients can penetrate the skin effectively. After applying the eye cream and allowing it to absorb, follow up with your regular face moisturizer to lock in hydration.

An undereye cream is a skincare product designed specifically for the delicate skin around the eyes. These creams are formulated to address common concerns such as dark circles, puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. Advanced eye creams like Refresh, can even help with sagging eyelids. Undereye creams contain a blend of active ingredients that provide hydration, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients to the skin.
Men's skin is generally thicker and oilier than women's skin, and these unique characteristics require different skincare approaches to address common concerns like dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines around the eyes. Moreover, the skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face, making it particularly vulnerable stressors.
We men often lead busy lives, juggling work, family, and other commitments. This can result in stress, lack of sleep, and exposure to environmental factors that can take a toll on the undereye area. Since the eyes are one of the first things people notice about you, having tired looking eyes can leave a bad first impression.
One of the primary benefits of using an undereye cream is its ability to reduce the appearance of dark circles. Eye creams typically contain ingredients that improve circulation, brighten the skin, and reduce pigmentation.
Undereye creams help minimize puffiness by soothing and calming the skin. Ingredients like caffeine and green tea extract can reduce inflammation and tighten the skin, giving you a more refreshed appearance.
The skin around the eyes is prone to dryness and dehydration, which can contribute to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Undereye creams provide intense hydration, keeping the skin soft, smooth, and supple.
Regular use of an undereye cream can help prevent the formation of fine lines and wrinkles by boosting collagen production and improving skin elasticity. Refresh contains a patented ingredient shown to have a skin smoothing effect just one day after the first application.
Undereye creams often contain antioxidants, which help neutralize free radicals and protect the skin from environmental damage. This can help slow down the aging process and keep your skin looking youthful and vibrant.
Undereye creams are formulated with ingredients that support collagen and elastin production, which are essential for maintaining the skin's elasticity and firmness. By enhancing skin elasticity, undereye creams can help prevent sagging and keep the skin around the eyes looking firm and taut.
For those with dry skin, look for an undereye cream that contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides. These ingredients help to lock in moisture and prevent dehydration.
If you have oily skin, opt for a lightweight, non-greasy undereye cream. Ingredients like niacinamide and witch hazel can help control oil production and prevent clogged pores.
For sensitive skin, choose an undereye cream with gentle, fragrance-free ingredients. Look for products containing calming ingredients like chamomile, aloe vera, and oatmeal extract to soothe irritation and redness.
We know how daunting it is to find the right undereye cream. That is why we formulated Refresh to be suitable for all skin types while addressing just about all of the undereye issues men face. Backed by our Happiness Guarantee.
In addition to using undereye creams, adopting certain lifestyle habits can significantly improve the appearance of the undereye area:
Sleep: Ensure you get enough quality sleep, as lack of rest can exacerbate dark circles and puffiness. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and flush out toxins. Dehydration can make your undereye area look dull and tired.
Diet: Incorporate foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants into your diet to promote healthy skin. Foods like leafy greens, berries, and nuts can help improve skin elasticity and reduce inflammation.
Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity can improve blood circulation and contribute to overall skin health.
Stress management: Find ways to manage stress, such as meditation, exercise, or yoga to avoid the negative impact of stress on your skin's appearance.
To get the most out of your undereye cream, follow these steps:
The timeline for seeing results from an undereye cream can vary depending on the product and individual skin concerns. Most report seeing noticeable results from Refresh shortly after the first application with the skin continuing to improve with consistent use. However, if using an average undereye cream, most people start to notice improvements in the appearance of dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines after a few weeks of consistent use. Keep in mind that it's important to be patient and consistent with your skincare routine for optimal results.
Using an undereye cream is an essential step in men's skincare routine. It can help address common concerns like dark circles, puffiness, fine lines, and wrinkles, while promoting a refreshed and youthful appearance. Choosing the right undereye cream (Refresh) for your skin type and adopting healthy lifestyle habits can significantly enhance the overall health of your skin. Incorporate an undereye cream into your daily regimen and experience the transformative benefits for yourself.
Can I use my regular face moisturizer as an undereye cream?
While you can use a regular face moisturizer around your eyes, undereye creams are specifically formulated to address the unique needs of the delicate eye area. They generally contain a higher concentration of active ingredients, making them more effective at targeting common eye concerns.
When should I start using an undereye cream?
It's never too early to start using an undereye cream. Incorporating one into your skincare routine in your 20s can help prevent the early signs of aging and maintain the skin's overall health.
How often should I apply undereye cream?
Undereye creams should be applied twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening, for optimal results.
Can undereye creams cause irritation?
Some people may experience irritation from certain undereye creams, especially if they have sensitive skin. It's essential to choose a cream that is suitable for your skin type and to patch test the product before using it around your eyes. Fragrances are a leading cause of irritation which is why all of our products are fragrance free.
Do undereye creams work for everyone?
Undereye creams can provide noticeable improvements for many people. However, the effectiveness of a product depends on factors such as the individual's skin type, the specific concerns being addressed, and the consistency of use. It's crucial to be patient and consistent with your skincare routine to see the best results. If you're unsure about which undereye cream to choose, consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional for personalized recommendations based on your skin type and concerns. Or save yourself the hassle and give Refresh a try. It is backed by our money back guarantee so you can try it stress-free.

Contrary to popular belief, shaving does not make your beard grow faster or thicker. Hair growth is determined by genetics, hormones and lifestyle factors, not by shaving. When you shave, the hair is cut off at the surface of the skin, making it appear thicker and darker. However, this is just an illusion, as the actual hair shaft remains unchanged.
A beard can be just as clean as any other part of your body, provided you practice proper hygiene. Be sure to wash your beard regularly with a gentle cleanser like our probiotic face and beard wash, Cleanse, followed by a thorough rinse. This will help remove dirt, dead skin cells, and excess oil. Regular brushing and combing can also keep your beard looking clean and well-groomed.
Beard oils and balms are essential for maintaining a healthy, well-conditioned beard. These products provide nourishment and hydration to the hair and the underlying skin, preventing dryness, itchiness, and irritation. Beard oils and balms also help to soften and tame unruly hairs, making your beard easier to style.
Regardless of which product you choose, a daily facial moisturizer is the foundation of any proper grooming routine. And for men with shorter beards, a beard friendly facial moisturizer like Hydrate may be all that you need.
While it's true that some beards can be itchy, especially during the initial growth phase, this discomfort can be managed with proper care. Regularly washing, conditioning, and moisturizing your beard can help soothe itchiness and prevent dry skin. Additionally, using a beard brush or comb can help distribute natural oils throughout the hair, further reducing itchiness and irritation.
Not everyone's beard will grow evenly or consistently, and that's perfectly normal. Factors such as genetics, hormones, time of year, and age can all play a role in how your beard grows. If you're experiencing patchiness or uneven growth, be patient and give your beard time to fill in. You can also try implementing the following tips to promote fuller growth:
Don't let these beard care myths hold you back from achieving your beard goals. By debunking these misconceptions and following proper care practices, you can grow and maintain a healthy, well-groomed beard. Remember, patience and consistency are key when it comes to beard care.
1. How often should I wash my beard?
Aim to wash your beard 1-2 times per week with Cleanse. Over-washing can strip away natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
2. Can I use regular hair products on my beard?
It's best to use products specifically designed for beards, as they are formulated to meet the unique needs of facial hair and the underlying skin.
3. How long does it take to grow a full beard?
On average, it takes about 2-6 months to grow a full beard, depending on factors like genetics, age, and overall health. Beards typically grow about one half inch per month.
4. Are there any medical conditions that can affect beard growth?
Yes, conditions like hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, and alopecia areata can impact beard growth. If you suspect an underlying medical issue, consult with a healthcare professional.
5. Do beard vitamins and supplements actually work?
While results can vary from person to person, some individuals may experience improved beard growth by taking supplements containing essential vitamins and minerals. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.

]]>Before we embark on this hairy adventure, let's first distinguish between our two contestants: beard oil and beard balm.
Beard oil is a slick, fast-absorbing potion that's like a spa day for your beard and the skin beneath it. It's a magical concoction of natural carrier oils and essential oils, providing hydration and a dazzling shine to make your beard irresistible.
Beard balm is the rugged cousin of beard oil, with a thicker, pomade-like consistency. Crafted with a mix of carrier oils, essential oils, and natural waxes or butters, beard balm is your go-to for styling and taming those rebellious whiskers while keeping them soft and conditioned.
Now that we've met our contenders, let's explore the wonders of beard oil and why your beard will thank you for using it.
Beard oil is like a tall glass of water for your parched beard and the skin underneath. It locks in moisture, preventing dryness and flakiness. It's a lifesaver during the harsh winter months or for those living in moisture-sucking climates.
Beard oil transforms coarse and rough beard hairs into touchable, soft whiskers. A softer beard is not only more caressable (wink, wink) but also easier to groom and manage.
Itchy, irritated skin is a common nemesis during the early stages of beard growth. Beard oil fights off these pesky foes by moisturizing the skin and creating a barrier that reduces friction between your hair and skin. Say hello to itch-free bliss! And if you’re really struggling with beard itch, make sure you give Hydrate a shot. It is guaranteed to help with that annoying itch.
Some beard oils (like ours) contain ingredients like castor oil or jojoba oil, which help unleash your beard's full potential. These oils nourish the hair follicles, encouraging a fuller, healthier beard that would make any lumberjack proud.
Now let's dive into the beard balm's corner and see what it brings to the table.
Our beard balm Groom provides a light hold, giving you the power to tame and style your beard like a pro. The natural waxes and butters help you shape your beard, ensuring it stays on point all day long. There are other beard balms that provide a high degree of hold if you are so inclined. They tend to include petroleum derived ingredients and can be a really B to wash out so we prefer to stay with the nourishing naturals like shea butter.
Like its slick counterpart, beard balm provides hydration to your beard and skin. Its thicker consistency, however, makes it the ultimate moisture bodyguard, especially for those with dry or coarse beards.
Beard balm creates a protective force field around your beard, defending it from the elements like wind, cold, and pollution. This barrier helps prevent damage and keeps your beard looking its best, even in the face of adversity.
Using beard balm regularly can boost your beard's overall health. The blend of natural oils, waxes, and butters nourish and condition your beard, supporting growth, reducing breakage, and banishing split ends.
With a sea of beard products out there, picking the perfect beard oil or beard balm can be as tough as choosing your favorite pizza topping. If you want to make your life difficult and don’t want to go with our award-winning beard oil and beard balm, consider these factors when making your decision:
Scout for top-notch, natural ingredients like carrier oils (e.g., jojoba, argan, or baobab oil) and essential oils (e.g., eucalyptus, lavender, or orange peel). Steer clear of artificial fragrances and harsh chemicals that could irritate your skin, much like a mosquito at a campfire.
Not sure if it contains artificial fragrances? Check the bottle. If you see “fragrance” or “perfume” on the label, that product uses cheap, synthetic chemicals to add scent instead of pure essential oils. Given the growing body of evidence demonstrating the harmful effects of synthetic fragrances, we decided from the beginning that we would never use fragrances in any of our products.
Choose a consistency that matches your preferences and beard type. If you have a short beard or enjoy a lightweight product, beard oil may be the winner. For longer, thicker beards or those on the quest for a styling product, beard balm could be the champion.
Beard oils and balms come in an array of scents, from woodsy and earthy to fresh and citrusy. Pick a scent that tickles your fancy, but remember that some essential oils also offer bonus benefits like antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties. Yet another reason why fragrance free is the way to be!
Introducing beard oil or beard balm to your skincare routine is as easy as pie. After washing your face with Cleanse: Daily Probiotic Face + Beard Wash and hydrating it with Hydrate: Daily Probiotic Face + Beard Moisturizer, apply a few drops of beard oil or a dollop of beard balm to your fingertips. Massage the product into your beard like a loving pet owner, ensuring it reaches the skin beneath. Comb or brush your beard to distribute the product evenly and style as desired.
Incorporating beard oil or beard balm into your skincare routine can take your beard game to the next level. By keeping your beard moisturized, soft, and protected, these products help you maintain a dashing, well-groomed appearance worthy of a round of applause.
Q1: Can I double-dip and use both beard oil and beard balm together?
A: Absolutely! Apply beard oil first for some serious moisturizing and conditioning, then follow up with beard balm for styling and extra protection. It's the ultimate beard care dream team. And of course make sure you apply your daily facial moisturizer before applying your beard oil/balm.
Q2: How often should I treat my beard with beard oil or beard balm?
A: Generally, once or twice a day should do the trick, depending on your beard's needs and the climate you live in. Those with desert-dry beards or living in colder environments may need more frequent pampering.
Q3: Are beard oil and beard balm suitable for all types of bearded beasts?
A: Indeed! Both products can benefit all beard types. However, the consistency and specific ingredients may vary based on your beard's needs, so choose a product that suits your majestic mane and preferences.

Cleanse: Daily Probitoctic Face + Beard Wash is not just a beard wash. It is a facial cleanser designed for men with facial hair. When it comes to men’s grooming, the beard care brands focus on facial hair and the skincare brands focus on the skin. That means with traditional products you need a beard wash AND a face wash. Not with Cleanse. This powerhouse is all you need to care for both your face and face fur. Organic aloe vera and niacinamide help to soothe and hydrate both the skin and the beard while balancing oil production. It also contains tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil, which work together to fight bacteria and prevent breakouts, leaving the skin and beard clean and fresh. Our probiotic technology positively influences both the quality and speed of epidermal growth resulting in better barrier function, recovery and skin renewal.
How to use Cleanse:
How often should you wash your face and beard?
Face – Wash your face at least once per day but no more than twice a day. Over washing can damage your skin and result in excessive oil production.
Facial Hair – You only need to lather up your beard 1 – 2 times a week, or as your lifestyle demands (fret not mud wrestlers, Cleanse is safe to use on your beard everyday if needed). On the days you are only washing your face, you still want to rinse your beard with water, just no need to suds it up.
Since Cleanse is designed for both your face and beard, on the days you are not washing your beard, simply massage Cleanse into your face and neck then thoroughly rinse your face and beard. No need for a separate face wash!
After cleansing, it's essential to moisturize your skin and beard to keep them healthy and hydrated. Hydrate Daily Probiotic Face + Beard Moisturizer is a lightweight, fragrance-free fast-absorbing moisturizer designed for men with facial hair. Organic aloe vera, jojoba oil, and hyaluronic acid work together to soothe and moisturize both the skin and the beard without leaving a greasy residue. From reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to stopping beard itch and irritation, Hydrate does everything a man needs it to do.
How to use Hydrate:
For best results, apply immediately after towel drying. One way moisturizers work is by retaining moisture in the skin and beard. When we shower or wet our face and beard, additional moisture is pulled into both. Once we dry off, that excess moisture begins to evaporate. Applying a moisturizer after towel drying helps to lock in that additional moisture and provides far better results than just applying to parched skin.
Note: If you use our Refresh Eye Cream, apply it before Hydrate. If you using beard oil or beard balm, apply after Hydrate.
By following this two-step skincare routine, you can quickly achieve clean, well-hydrated skin and facial hair that look and feel amazing. Our natural ingredients and probiotic technology are gentle on the skin and beard, making them perfect for everyday use.
This quick skincare routine is super simple to incorporate into your bathroom time, and its effectiveness will leave your skin and beard looking and feeling their best.

While these two products do the heavy lifting, what if you beard needs to be tamed? What if you love the look of a well oiled, glistening beard? In our next post we’ll talk about how to add a beard oil or beard balm to your grooming routine.
Beard flakes, beard dandruff, beardruff are all terms used to describe dead skin cells trapped in and falling from your beard. While there are a number of known beard dandruff causes, there are still some mysteries out there. It's important to note that not all beard dandruff is the same, so in this post we'll cover the three most common causes of beard dandruff and the primary cause of seasonal beardruff.
One of the most common causes of beard flakes is dry skin. We are constantly shedding dead skin cells. Beardruff occurs when that shedding accelerates due to dry skin. Bearduff associated with dry skin tends to be smaller, dry flakes.
Seborrheic dermatitis is another common cause of dandruff, be it in your beard or elsewhere. It is a rash that normally causes red, scaly, greasy skin. It can occur anywhere on the body where the skin has oil glands. If it occurs on the scalp or beneath your beard, dandruff is soon to follow. While scientists don’t know exactly what causes seborrheic dermatitis, certain factors play a role. One of the most common is an overgrowth of malassezia, which is a type of yeast present on everyone’s skin. As we learn more about the skin’s microbiome, it is becoming more apparent that maintaining your skin’s barrier function and supporting your skin’s microbiome is a key component to preventing a number of skin conditions. This is why all of our products are pH-focused and why we incorporated probiotics into our formulations to help maintain your skin’s microbiome and support healthy barrier function.
Seb Derm flareups are also associated with stress, autoimmune disorders and hormones, including testosterone therapy.
Dandruff caused by seborrheic dermatitis tends to be larger and oilier than dry skin induced flakes. You might also notice yellow crust in the affected areas.
Otherwise known as contact dermatitis, this occurs when your body is sensitive to specific ingredients in grooming products. This reaction results in red, itchy, scaly and flaky skin. If you just started using a new grooming product and notice flakes, contact dermatitis might be the culprit. Fragrance chemicals are a primary cause of contact dermatitis so if you have sensitive skin, always look for fragrance free beard grooming products.
When the temperature drops, so does the humidity. This decrease in humidity (both indoors and out) leads to dry skin. If left untreated, this itchy, dry skin can start producing those annoying beard flakes.
Since there is not one single cause of beard dandruff, the best defense against beardruff is establishing the right grooming routine with the right products for you. In severe cases, medication may be required. But before considering prescription drugs, let’s square away the beard care fundamentals.
Use the right beard + face wash, the right way
First, you need to use the right face + beard wash. Harsh soaps and cleansers will overstrip your face and beard leading to skin dryness and irritation. This opens the door to dry skin induced beard flakes. Harsh cleansers can also disrupt your skin’s pH and have a negative effect on the beneficial bacteria and microbes that are essential for healthy skin function. Given recent advancements in our understanding of the important role microbes play in beard and skin health, we reformulated our skincare + beard care to include beneficial probiotic ingredients.
Time & Temperature
When you wash your face, use lukewarm water. Hot water removes more of the beneficial oils we want to keep on the face and beard. When it comes to frequency, most guys only need to lather up their face once per day. If you only wash once per day, we recommend washing your face at night to remove the day’s build up. In the morning, simply rinse your face and beard with water before applying your daily facial moisturizer.
When it comes to sudsing up your beard, we recommend washing your beard 1-2 times per week. Now, if you are experiencing beardruff, washing your beard when the flakes first appear could be beneficial but it depends on the underlying cause of your beard dandruff. Adding a Face + Beard Charcoal Scrub to your beard grooming routine will help remove excess dead skin cells and can help stop beardruff before it starts.
Use a fragrance-free Face + Beard Moisturizer
Regardless of how gentle the cleanser is, some skin drying will occur. It is important to always apply a daily facial moisturizer after towel drying. Ideally, you want to moisturize within two minutes of getting out of the shower. We designed HYDRATE: Daily Probiotic Facial + Beard Moisturizer to address the most common causes of dryness and beardruff. BUT, as with any skincare product, read the ingredient label before applying. Aloe Vera is the top ingredient in HYDRATE, which is awesome for most people…unless you’re allergic to it! We don’t want any contact dermatitis, after all. Like CLEANSE, HYDRATE includes probiotics to help support your skin’s microbiome and healthy barrier function.
This simple two-step skincare routine helps to eliminate just about all beard growing issues.
Add a Face + Beard Oil or Beard Balm
While we’re confident a skincare routine incorporating a high quality probiotic cleanser and moisturizer like CLEANSE + HYDRATE will address most causes of beardruff, if seasonal beardruff is still causing you problems, adding a beard oil or beard balm to your beard grooming routine might just be the extra hydrating firepower you need to subdue that dry, flakey skin. Here’s why:
Moisturizer ingredients fall into three categories: humectants, emollients and occlusives.
Humectants are key in maintaining hydration. Humectants attract and chemically bind water in the skin. Because of this, they have the ability to temporarily plump up the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is an excellent humectant that can bind 1,000x its own weight in water, which is why it is one of our favorite skincare ingredients that we use throughout our skincare and beard care line.
Emollients act by replacing skin lipids and filling in gaps between skin cells. They can help enhance skin barrier function which helps reduce transepidermal water loss.
Occlusives create a barrier over the skin and help prevent water loss at the surface. Think of them as a temporary sealant. Oils, shea butter and beeswax are all examples of occlusive ingredients. Since occlusives often have a greasy feel and shiny finish, they are not used in high concentrations in most facial moisturizers.
Yet in super dry environments or in the depths of a harsh winter, adding an occlusive rich product to your routine might just do the trick. We recommend adding either a Face + Beard Oil like SOFTEN to your routine or a hydrating beard balm like GROOM. Applied after moisturizing, both of these occlusive products will add an additional layer of moisture protection to your skin and beard thus reducing beardruff.
Add Humidity
If you spend a lot of time indoors, using a humidifier will add moisture to the air and subsequently reduce the amount of moisturizer that is pulled from your skin and beard. This will help reduce skin dryness and subsequently beard flakes.
We hope this helps! The information provided in this blog post is intended to be fun and educational. It is not intended to replace medical advice. While less common, there are numerous other causes of beard dandruff to include allergic reactions, infections, certain medications and applying irritants to your face (fragrances are irritants which is why we don’t use them in our products) to name a few. If your beard dandruff worsens or is associated with other symptoms, contact your medical provider.

If you’ve ever grown a beard, you know beard itch. But why is it that even seasoned beardsmen see an uptick in beard itch and irritation around this time of year? We’ll explain the reasons why and how to address them. But before we dive into this specific beard itch case, let’s recap why beards itch in general.
If you are a first time beard grower, welcome! If you haven’t noticed already, your beard will itch. Beard itch is very common in the early stages of beard growth. While there are a number of beard itch causes, the three most common relate to your newly elongated whiskers and lack of hydration.
When you shave, the razor cuts your coarse whiskers at an angle that leaves them with a sharp edge. As your whiskers grow, that sharp edge can scratch and irritate your skin, resulting in itch. In some cases, the razor will actually elevate and cut your whiskers. When the razor passes, the whiskers retreat below the skin. As they begin to grow again, that sharp edge digs into your skin as it grows toward the surface. Itchy.
The second instigator of beard itch is dry skin, which we have all likely experienced. As your beard grows, the skin below your beard can become dry and itchy. This happens because our faces naturally produce oils that moisturize the skin. These same oils also hydrate your whiskers and as they grow, there isn’t enough oil to keep the skin beneath your beard moisturized. Combine this with sharp, coarse edges rubbing against said dry skin and you'll get an itch that would make a flea proud. Itchy beard is one of the main reasons we created HYDRATE, our daily facial + beard moisturizer. But more on that later.
As we just mentioned, dryness is a major player in beard itch. Using the wrong cleanser or washing your beard too much will strip your skin and beard of its natural oils and induce beard itch. That is why it is important to never wash your face and beard with an old bar of soap (too harsh) and only use facial cleansers designed for both your face and beard. Our face + beard wash CLEANSE is the perfect blend of hydrating cleansers and nourishing moisturizers that wash away the bad and leave the good.
Now onto the main event!
With cooler temperatures comes lower humidity. While most people equate cold temps with dry skin, the lower humidity is the actual culprit. Dry air sucks more moisture out of your skin (transepidermal water loss) and beard then more humid air. And it's not just the air outside that becomes drier in the colder months. Heaters and furnaces are notorious dehumidifiers. The result is a drier environment that pulls more moisture out of your skin + beard leading to beard itch and irritation over time.
Whenever you wash your beard, you should use lukewarm water. During the winter months, we’re inclined to take hotter, longer showers. Hot showers wash away more of our body’s natural moisturizing oils and lead to skin dryness.
How do you stop winter beard itch? There are four primary ways to stop beard itch.
Moisturizers pull additional moisture into your skin + beard and help hold it there. Well-formulated facial moisturizers also support your skin’s barrier function which helps to reduce transepidermal water loss, keeping more moisture in your skin. We formulated HYDRATE: Daily Probiotic Facial + Beard Moisturizer with a robust blend of moisturizers, hydrators and probiotics to support healthy barrier function while providing the soothing hydration your skin and beard desperately need without clogging your pores. If you’re wrestling with an itchy beard or dry skin, we guarantee HYDRATE will help (or your money back).
Regardless of which moisturizer you use, you need to use it properly. It’s important to apply your moisturizer within a few minutes after showering. When we shower, our skin absorbs some of that water. By applying a moisturizer after towel drying, we are able to capture and retain that extra moisture in the skin that would otherwise evaporate.
Not showering today? Wet your face and beard in the sink with lukewarm water just like you would if you were washing your face. You want your skin and beard to absorb some water before applying your facial moisturizer. If you apply your moisturizer to bone dry skin, it just won’t be as effective and won’t absorb as well.
Using the wrong wash will cause more harm than good. It’s important to use a pH-focused cleanser that is able to cleanse your face and facial hair without overdoing it. We designed CLEANSE to have just enough cleansing power to remove the bad stuff without overstripping the good.
Unless you have super oily skin, you only need to wash your face once a day and your beard 1 - 2 times per week. Washing too much strips away your body’s natural oils and can damage your skin barrier. And when you wash, don’t use hot water. This will further strip your skin and cause dryness, itch and irritation.
First off, you need a well formulated wash and moisturizer. If you trust what you’ve got and are using the products properly, the solution might be as simple as using a little bit more moisturizer. Just like you need more water when you’re thirsty, thirsty skin requires more hydration. We use 1 - 2 pumps of HYDRATE in the warmer months and bump it up to 3 pumps when the temperature drops and the heaters come on.
Upped your moisturizer dose and still experiencing itch? It might be time to bring in reinforcements.
Applied after moisturizing, both of these occlusive products will add an additional layer of moisture protection to your skin and beard.
If you spend a lot of time indoors with the heater blasting, using a humidifier will add moisture to the air and subsequently reduce the amount of moisturizer that is pulled from your skin and beard.
Now I’m sure you’ve never heard anyone say we need to drink more water butttt don’t we all need a reminder? Staying well hydrated helps reduce dry skin and subsequently helps reduce beard itch. Are we saying downing an extra glass of water will immediately fix your beard itch? Nope, but dehydration is an aggravating factor and drinking more water is an easy thing to do that provides a whole host of benefits beyond your skin and beard.
We hope this helps! The information provided in this blog post is intended to be fun and educational. It is not intended to replace medical advice. While less common, there are numerous other causes of beard itch to include allergic reactions, infections, certain medications and applying irritants to your face (fragrances are irritants which is why we don’t use them in our products) to name a few. ]]>Don’t even think about scrubbing that bar of soap on your face. The harsh chemicals in bath soaps – and most shampoos – are too aggressive for the skin on your face and facial hair. Have you ever taken a shower and your skin felt tight or itchy after? It's the soap. Switch to a specially formulated Face + Beard Wash. It will vanquish the grit and grime on your skin and beard without compromising your skin’s pH balance or microbiome. Bonus points for a probiotic wash that helps support your skin’s microbial helpers.
Be careful with heavily fragranced beard washes. f you see “fragrance” listed in the ingredients, that fragrance could consist of a few synthetic chemicals or hundreds of chemicals, and companies in the United States don’t have to tell you what synthetic chemicals they use. Here in the U.S. there are many fragrances in use that are banned in the UK and EU due to safety concerns. These include hormone disruption, male infertility and cancer. That is why we only use all-natural essential oils to impart the scent in our Probiotic Daily Face + Beard Wash. And of course each individual ingredient is clearly listed on the label. (It feels good when you have nothing to hide.)
We all love a steaming hot shower. But if the water is too hot it will dry out your skin, water that’s too cold won’t allow your pores to open. Lukewarm water is the sweet spot.
You should cleanse your face once per day. Those with particularly oily skin can wash twice daily. Overwashing can dry your skin, causing it to produce more oil to compensate. You may then feel the need to wash more leading to a vicious cycle of over washing/excessive oil production that ultimately leads to skin irritation and various other skin conditions.
During the day, grime and pollutants accumulate on your skin, some of which actually speed up the aging process. Remember, the goal is to remove the day’s nastiness without overstriping your skin. If you don’t wash enough, dirt, pollution and other nastiness can accumulate on your skin leading to clogged pores, breakouts and tired, dull looking skin.
As for your beard, wash that bad boy once or twice per week. Like your skin, you don’t want to strip the beard of its natural oils. If you get particularly dirty during the day you should wash your beard as necessary.
When it comes to timing, wash your face at night if you are only washing once per day. This allows you to rinse the day’s grime away. The last thing you want is dirt and pollution marinating your skin overnight. In the morning, simply rinse your face and beard with lukewarm water, towel dry, apply your daily moisturizer and then crush the day.
Washing, by its very nature, removes some of the natural oils your skin needs to properly function. If the only grooming product you use is a beard wash, you’ll likely notice your beard and skin feeling a bit dry regardless of how gentle the wash. Every person, regardless of facial hair, should use a moisturizer after washing. This helps restore moisture to the skin while reinforcing your skin’s natural barrier against harmful microbes and water loss.
The best time to apply facial moisturizers and beard oils is right after you’re done washing your face. Your face and beard are the cleanest they will be, your pores are open and applying immediately locks in the hydration from the water. Get the most out of your products and don’t wait to apply. If you use both a moisturizer and beard oil, apply the moisturizer first.

Exfoliation is a step a lot of men overlook in their grooming routines despite the very noticeable results! In this step-by-step guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know to properly exfoliate underneath your beard, answer some common questions and dispel some myths.
Chemical exfoliation - Uses acids applied to the skin that dissolve dead skin cells. Weaker formulations are sold over the counter while stronger formulas are used by dermatologists and other skincare professionals in a clinical setting.
Physical exfoliation - Utilizes granular substances like ground up seeds, shells, rock and crystalline substances such as sugar. When massaged on the skin and beard, these substances physically loosen and remove dead skin cells.
While brushing/combing your beard does provide some exfoliation, we’ve found that it is superficial and not as effective as using an actual exfoliant like a face and beard scrub.
Exfoliation brightens the complexion by removing dead and dull skin cells. Is your skin looking tired and dull? Exfoliate. Experiencing flaking skin and/or beard dandruff? Exfoliation can help. Face and beard just not feeling clean even after washing? Time to exfoliate. Exfoliation helps to deeply clean your skin and pores.
Most of us only need to exfoliate once or twice a week. Any more than that risks damaging your skin and causing more harm than good. Start with once a week and go from there.
With some types of exfoliants, yes, you need to wash your face after, which can lead to overdrying of the face and beard. However, with a properly formulated product washing after exfoliating isn’t necessary. We formulated our charcoal sugar scrub to take care of all the dirty work for you. No need to use a separate wash after.
Yes, when properly done, exfoliating is safe. Using the wrong type of exfoliant or exfoliating too aggressively can damage both the skin and beard.

]]>Timing, age and genetics are everything.
Beards take time. When you first start growing a beard, give it at least one month before you start thinking you have a patchy beard. The reality is that we all have patchy beards in the first month (or three).
Patchy beard after a month? This is totally normal. Different parts of your beard grow at different rates. If you are three to four months into your beard and still see large patches, don’t worry, there is still hope. It is not uncommon for a patchy beard at month one to develop into a glorious full beard by month four. When it comes to beard growth, patience truly is a virtue.
Age. Most men do not reach their full beard potential until the age of 35. That’s right, 35. If you are younger than 35 then your beard has yet to reach its full potential. Plenty of guys have gone through their 20s thinking they can’t grow a full beard. Then their 30s roll around and all of a sudden they have majestic beards. It’s true that most men first start developing facial hair in their early teens but that kid with a full beard in school is the exception, not the rule.
Genetics. Ok, the truth is that some guys are just born with more beard hair follicles. The more follicles, the thicker the beard. Excluding surgery, there is nothing you can do to increase your natural number of hair follicles. So, like your height, this is totally out of your control and is not worth your worry. Moving on...
1. Give your beard the time it needs to grow. Beards grow about one half inch per month. But not all of your follicles are in the same growth phase at the same time. So while one follicle might grow half an inch, another might not show any growth at all. So after a month (or three) your beard may look like it has patchy spots but not to worry, at this point there is no reason to believe those areas will be forever beard barren.
2. You’ve been growing your beard for a few months and still see patches. What should you do? It is time to trim. While counterintuitive, trimming the longer parts of your beard makes your beard more symmetrical while taking focus away from the patchy parts. Additionally, it gives the patchy areas time to grow and catch up.
Stubble/short beards look great on everybody. Multiple surveys show that women prefer the stubble/short beard look over longer beards (we happen to think a wizard beard is just as attractive). If you are dealing with a patchy beard, the well trimmed beard is an excellent option.
3. Brush your beard to fill in the patchy spots aka the beard combover. Just about every guy has patches in their beard. I sure do. As your beard fills in, the more voluminous areas around the patch will help to cover those areas. I have bald spots on either side of my mouth. In the first few months, these were super noticeable. But now, the other parts of my beard have filled in and completely cover these patches.
4. There is a link between your lifestyle and your beard health. Hormones are a huge factor in beard growth. If you want to grow a healthy beard you need to exercise frequently and stay away from high sugary, processed foods. Exercise and a diet rich in fresh fruits, veggies and lean meats is the way to go. They help promote your body’s production of testosterone and other hormones linked to thick beard growth in addition to providing the nutrients your body needs to grow that epic beard. You must take care of your beard before it will take care of you.
Exercise and beard growth: We’re talking about weight training here. Specifically, functional fitness and compound movements. Squats, deadlifts, push-ups, pull-ups and my personal favorite, overhead squats. These movements are the most effective when it comes to boosting testosterone levels. New to weight training? Consult a trainer or coach first. Form is paramount with these bad boys. Start light and work your way up. Many a man has gone too heavy too soon and sidelined themselves with injury.
Diet and beard growth: Processed foods and high sugar (including artificial sweeteners) is the enemy. Sadly, the Western diet of fast food, energy drinks and microwavable meals are detrimental to reaching your full beard potential. Focus on clean, whole foods like fresh meats, fish, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Hair is made of protein so ensure you are getting enough in your diet. Deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals are also believed to influence beard growth. Ensure you are getting enough zinc, iron, vitamin D, B and C and omega-threes. And of course, stay well hydrated.
Sleep and beard growth: A good night’s sleep makes everything better. Getting a full eight hours of sleep increases overall health. Sleep is the time when our bodies repair. Blood circulation increases in our sleep and allows nutrients to get where they need to go.
5. Stress and stress hormones can lead to hair loss and inhibit beard growth. If you once had a full beard and are now noticing patches, check your stress levels. Exercise is an excellent way to manage stress – in addition to promoting natural beard growth – but find what works best for you. From meditation to skydiving, find your zen.
6. Establish a healthy grooming routine. Growing a beard brings with it some new grooming challenges. Using a beard specific wash, daily probiotic moisturizer and a softening beard oil will help make the process much more enjoyable while helping your skin look its best. When it comes to beard care products, you really do get what you pay for. Quality natural ingredients are not cheap. The cheaper the product the higher the likelihood it contains bottom of the barrel (or counterfeit) ingredients that provide little nourishment/functional value to your beard.
7. Ultimately, it is up to you and the look you’d like to achieve and what your genetics will allow you to achieve. Beards are part of us but they do not define who we are as men. The reality is that most men get frustrated and give up before they reach their full beard potential. But if you’ve invested the time and effort and your beard still isn’t what you’d hoped, know that that is okay. The best advice we can give is to embrace your beard, grow what you can and accentuate the thick and full areas of your beard. Take the time to trim the longer whiskers to help keep your facial hair looking balanced and well kept. Oh, and don’t forget to eat your vegetables ;)

We are finally back in stock and super excited to introduce you to the enhanced Cleanse: Daily Probiotic Facial and Beard Wash. This is the same great wash that’s been our bestseller for years now, but with a few added benefits...
]]>What's new:
Enhanced formula to focus on protecting your skin’s microbiome and barrier function while purifying your face and hair follicles. In order to have healthy skin (and facial hair) your skin needs to have a healthy microbiome and properly functioning acid mantle. When those are thrown out of whack, you are vulnerable to numerous skin conditions and risk infection and skin dehydration. Washes – and especially soap – are notorious for raising your skin’s pH while striping away essential oils. Ever wash your face and it feels tight afterwards? That is a sign of face wash-induced acid mantle damage. And while our skin is incredibly resilient and can bounce back from these transgressions, problems arise when this occurs day after day after day. In fact, washing with too aggressive a soap can kick your oil production into overdrive. If oily skin or acne is a concern, using the wrong wash or washing too much can actually make matters worse. We’ve added several new ingredients to help your skin (and microbiome).New packaging! We want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem, which is why we’re now using airless pumps made from recycled plastic. Our old fliptop tubes were made from virgin plastic. Aside from helping the environment, our new packaging provides additional benefits:
That covers what’s new. So what’s the same?
If you’ve used our Face & Beard Wash before, Cleanse is still the invigorating cleanser you know and love.
For the skin - gently cleanses and refreshes without over-drying or spiking oil production. Cleanse is packed with grime-capturing surfactants that wash away the bad while leaving the good. Probiotics and niacinamide help skin renewal, strength and barrier function.
For the beard - dirt, grime and pollution are gently removed while moisturizers are added. Botanicals help reduce beard itch and beardruff while neutralizing beard odors.
As always, all of our products are fragrance free. Cleanse maintains its fresh and invigorating scent that is a joy to use but won’t stick around after the sudsy business is done. What’s left is a truly fresh and clean face and beard.

What’s new with stubble + ‘stache
We are now a certified Benefit Corporation! Certified B-Crops are businesses that meet the highest verified standard of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. To better understand how your acid mantle works, we need to first talk about pH. pH is the measure of how acidic or alkaline (basic) a solution is. It’s on a scale from 1 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline). A pH of 7 is considered neutral. Skin pH varies person to person, with everyone falling into a range between 4 and 7. Having an acidic pH is vital for proper barrier function. An acidic environment allows the good microbes that make up our skin’s microbiome to thrive, while preventing harmful microbes from infiltrating.
There are numerous threats to our natural pH levels, most commonly soaps and other skin care products that can actually raise your pH and push it out of favorable levels. For example, a higher pH encourages the growth of a bacteria named propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). And as I’m sure you guessed from the name, this bacteria plays a major role in many forms of acne.
There are several factors that can disrupt your natural pH and the acid mantle. The most common factors are:
Soaps and cleansers: Just by their nature, soaps have a higher pH and can raise skin pH levels. Ever wash with soap and have your skin feel tight and “squeaky clean” after? Damaged acid mantle. Harsh facial cleansers can be just as bad. That super lathery beard wash likely achieves that nice foamy action through ingredients with high pH. It’s important to look for cleansers that include hydrating ingredients such as aloe, glycerin, and moisturizing oils such as jojoba. Our Daily Face + Beard Cleanser is designed specifically to protect your acid mantle and support a healthy microbiome.
Fragrances in skincare: Fragrances are the skincare industry’s dirty little secret. There are thousands of different synthetic fragrance ingredients used in men’s skincare products and they don’t have to tell you what harsh chemicals they’re using to create that fragrance. If you see “fragrance” listed on an ingredient label it could represent five chemicals or 500 different chemicals. Dermatologists have long recommended fragrance-free products to those with sensitive skin and now we’re starting to better understand their negative effects on your acid mantle and microbiome. That’s not to say all fragrance chemicals are bad — some are totally safe — but there is no way for you to know which ones make up that “fragrance” listed on the bottle.
Age: As we age, our skin naturally becomes more alkaline. As the pH level rises, so does the tendency for our skin to become dry and damaged. That’s why it is important to incorporate a daily moisturizer into your grooming routine.
When the acid mantle is damaged, it can allow for harmful microbes to enter the skin and can cause skin dehydration. Common issues associated with barrier dysfunction include:
-Flaky, patchy skin
-Dry, irritated skin
-Premature aging
-Increased acne/breakouts
-Redness
-Skin sensitivity
-Rashes
Damage to your acid mantle is also partially responsible for acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema according to numerous medical studies.
When it comes to your acid mantle, doing less is more. Our bodies have an amazing ability to self correct if given the opportunity. Just because you used a soap that raised your skin’s pH doesn’t mean it stays at that elevated level forever — over time your body corrects itself. It does become problematic if you consistently throw your pH levels out of whack or consistently use products that send your skin into corrective overdrive.
Step One - stop using harsh soaps/over washing - Your skin shouldn’t feel tight after washing. If so, the cleanser is too harsh for your skin. And unless your job/environment demands it, you don’t really need to wash your face more than once a day. Preferably in the evening (to wash away the day’s grim), using warm (not hot) water. Our probiotic face + beard wash is specifically designed to treat your skin and acid mantle with the respect it deserves.
Step Two - Don’t over exfoliate. Strong chemical exfoliants and harsh physical exfoliants can further damage your acid mantle. That’s why we designed our probiotic charcoal sugar scrub to have just the right amount of “umph” without being too aggressive. Even with a properly balanced exfoliator, too much of a good thing is bad. If you have sensitive skin, exfoliate once a week. If you have oily skin, don’t exceed three times a week.
Step Three - Moisturize. By nature cleansers are going to temporarily raise your pH and disrupt some of your acid mantle. Applying the appropriate moisturizer after washing helps to seal in your skin’s moisture while sending reinforcements to your skin’s acid mantle. Ideally, apply within sixty seconds of washing/towel drying to really trap the hydration.
Look for a moisturizer that contains ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid and probiotics. These ingredients can help replenish lost moisture and repair the skin barrier. All of them (and then some) can be found in our new probiotic daily facial moisturizer. You can learn more about it here.
Step Four - Simplify. 10 step skincare routines raise a whole host of problems for your acid mantle and microbiome. Look for high quality, pH focused, multifunctional products.
stubble + ‘stache is a Certified B-Corp™ and service disabled veteran owned small business. All of our packaging is made from recycled plastic and with each order, we remove five plastic bottles from the ocean. While our products are formulated with facial hair in mind, all of our products can be used by all, regardless of gender or beard status. Proudly made in the USA with ingredients responsibly sourced from some of the most exotic places on earth.
*This article is intended to be helpful and educational. It’s not intended to replace treatment from a medical professional. If you have ongoing skin concerns, it is important to see your healthcare provider. Skin issues can have an impact on our mental health and it is important to know there are treatments available for even the most severe cases of acne and other conditions. You deserve to live a happy, healthy life and should never hesitate to seek treatment be it for a skin condition or other physical/mental concern.
When I started stubble + ‘stache back in 2012 I had one simple mission: Make the best damn skin and beard care products on the market. My laser focus was the performance and safety of our products. I wanted them to be the best at reducing beard itch, softening facial hair, at hydrating the skin, and at reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You get the point —we focused on what our products do for you and your facial hair.
We’ve grown a lot since then. While our primary focus is still you and your skin and beard care needs, we’ve expanded our aperture. We are no longer only concerned about the end product. In 2018 we started evaluating our supply chain and in 2019 we began to take a more holistic approach — from “farm to face.”
One aspect of this new approach is our packaging. First, we knew that our packaging had to be sustainable, and while glass is traditionally associated with sustainability, we did our research and realized just how energy intensive producing glass is, along with the severe environmental impact of mining the raw materials. For us, we determined the most responsible option is to make our new packaging from recycled plastic. It took some time but we found an American manufacturer that can produce jars from 100% Post Consumer Resin (PCR) aka recycled plastic, and airless pumps from ~99% recycled plastic.
We also decided to transition from tubes to airless pumps. While more expensive, airless pumps offer better product protection – by reducing the product’s contact with the air – and accessibility as they can be operated with one hand.
COVID-19, component shortages, selling out and shipping delays
As 2019 came to a close, we were weeks away from starting production on our new jars and airless pumps made from recycled plastic. We looked at our existing inventory and knew we had about six months left, which would cover us until the new products in the new packaging were ready. Enter COVID-19.
Given the existing supply chains and advanced manufacturing capabilities in China, our American packaging partner can only produce products made from recycled plastic at their China facility, though they tell us they should be able to shift production to their US factories in about 3-5 years...apparently retooling a factory takes a lot of time and money!
COVID shuts down China...and the factory. Let the waiting games begin.
As time passes, the factory reopens. But now there's a shortage of raw materials required to produce our products. The waiting game continues.
As America locks down, demand for our products skyrocket. In fact, we sold that six month’s worth of inventory in a matter of weeks. That’s why we sold out. And with no way to make more, all we can do is wait. Thus begins a cycle of shortages that prevents us from producing any products in 2020. As we rolled into 2021, all of the components are once again available, but the entire world is trying to produce just about more of everything which translates into long waiting times to get our containers produced. And since the world’s factories are producing record amounts of just about everything, there is serious stress on international shipping and the global transportation infrastructure.
So that’s where we stand now. All of our packaging is ready to go, we are just waiting for it to arrive at our lab here in the US.
Over the months we’ve received countless emails from people asking about our restock date. At this point we are pretty confident that we’ll be back in business by September. I say pretty because remember when the Suez Canal was blocked? Well, even though our shipping route doesn’t even transit that part of the world it delayed our shipment by almost a month. So, maybe all will go well and we’ll be back in stock by then, or, who knows, maybe aliens invade earth and the whole system shuts down again! Regardless, your support literally means the world to us and we are doing everything in our power to get back to business and bring you the best damn skincare products on the market.

P.S. shout out to all the other small business owners struggling to get sh*t done with all these delays and shortages!
]]>Minoxidil is an FDA approved, over the counter drug for treating certain types of hair loss in both men and women. While it is not fully understood how Minoxidil promotes hair growth, we do know that when it is used on the scalp, the hair growth is not permanent and growth is lost after you stop taking Minoxidil. It is important to note that Minoxidil does not create new hair follicles. It can awaken follicles that are dormant but it will not cause your body to create new hair follicles.
While the effects of Minox on the scalp and hair growth are well documented, until recently, there have been no formal medical studies addressing minox and beard growth. We’ve reviewed the study and consulted several doctors about the impact of Minoxidil and what we learned is a bit surprising...
According to a study published in the Japanese Dermatological Association’s Journal of Dermatology, the short answer is yes, but…
The study found that while Minoxidil did increase hair count in the test subjects, it did not increase the diameter of the hairs. Furthermore, it made no indication of minox transitioning vellus hairs into terminal hairs. It noted that the majority of hair growth was in the form of non-terminal hair growth.
While many bloggers say yes, there are no medical studies supporting this claim. We do know that it makes non-terminal hairs appear darker and stronger which could lead some to believe they now have terminal hairs.
Hormones. This transition begins at puberty but it is not instantaneous. Hairs are still transitioning well into your early 30s. Minoxidil is not a hormone. It is very possible that some of the new, thicker non-terminal hairs naturally transition into terminal hairs during treatment leaving some men to think that minoxidil caused the transition when in reality it was the beard’s natural progression. If you’d like to learn more about the beard growth cycle, check out this blog.
According to the study, the researchers believe that it is safe to use minoxidil for beard enhancement. That being said, there are known side effects (a common side effect being dry, flaky skin which can easily be addressed with a specialized moisturizer) and you should consult your doctor before starting minoxidil.
We know that when treatment is stopped for baldness, the gains are lost. To date, there is no scientific research showing that minoxidil beards will last indefinitely after treatment is stopped.
The reality is that beards take time. Most men don’t reach their full beard potential until their mid-30s. Minoxidil is an appealing option for guys looking to grow a fuller beard. Before starting a minoxidil regimen, it is important to consult a medical professional. There can be side effects and there are still many unknowns about how minox works in regards to beard growth. If you’re under the age of 20 and considering using minoxidil/Rogaine for beard growth, I’d wait.
However, if you insist on giving it a try, we are fans of KEEPS (link to their 5% solution on Amazon). There is also a beard oil with 5% minox. While we cannot vouch for it, here is their Amazon link.

]]>The virus' actual name is severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 is called coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This is a new virus that affects the respiratory system. It is transmitted through respiratory droplets and is particularly harmful to the elderly and those with preexisting health conditions.
Respiratory droplets are expelled when you cough, sneeze or simply breathe. Essentially, they are tiny droplets of spit and other fluid from within your mouth, throat, and lungs.
Coronavirus is primarily spread person to person. Infection occurs when the respiratory droplets of an infected person come in contact with your mouth, nose or inhaled into your lungs.
Infection can also occur if you touch a contaminated surface and then touch your nose, mouth and possibly eyes.
The CDC does not recommend the average person wear a respirator (N95 or other medical mask) unless they are sick or are in contact with those who are infected. Please leave those for first responders and medical professionals.
On April 3 the CDC released new guidance stating we should all wear cloth face coverings while out in public. This new guidance is not to suggest that a cloth face mask will protect you from contracting the virus. Instead, it is intended to protect others from you should you be infected but not symptomatic. As such, the CDC still does not advise men to shave their beards unless required to properly wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
No. Unless you are required to wear a respirator, there is no need to shave. There is no medical evidence to indicate that men with beards have a higher risk of contracting COVID-19. Some doctors speculate that men with facial hair might have a lower risk of contracting the disease because beards may serve as a primitive filter that could possibly catch respiratory droplets before they enter your nose or mouth.
The best prevention for COVID-19 is proper hygiene, frequent hand washing, and social distancing (staying six feet away from other people). We need to wash our hands frequently and avoid touching our faces and beards. We should also wash our beards once a day if we are in an area with communal spread.
To recap, CDC beard advice is not to shave your beard. Coronavirus prevention is best done by washing your hands and practicing social distancing while wearing a cloth face covering. COVID-19 beard care is pretty simple — wash your beard more frequently and try not to touch it throughout the day.

]]>Before diving into details, it is important to note that beard oils are not created equal. The type, quality and concentration of the ingredients matter. Before purchasing a bottle of beard oil, take a look at the ingredient list, and in particular, the order in which they’re listed. Following FDA guidelines, the highest concentration ingredient is listed first, all the way down to the lowest concentration ingredient, listed last. While ingredient labels do not have to disclose specific percentage concentration, it is safe to assume that the first few ingredients listed comprise the majority of the beard oil.
Both argan and jojoba oils are highly effective beard oil ingredients. Beard oil connoisseurs will tell you not to waste your time with a beard oil that does not contain one (if not both) of these amazing ingredients. But, just having them in the bottle is not enough. You really need to know how much is in the bottle. Without a high enough concentration of these oils, you will not experience the full benefit.
Shady cheap beard oil trick: Pure jojoba and argan oils are expensive ingredients. Using them in the appropriate quantities demands a higher price. Shady companies will include trace amounts of these oils (check the back of the label) charge a cheap price and then aggressively market the ingredients. In reality, the concentrations are so low that you are not receiving any real benefit from the beard oil.
It is not just the concentration that matters, but the quality as well. First, it matters how the oil producing plants are grown. Lower quality raw material will be cheaper than the higher quality. Next, how the oil is extracted is important. There are two primary ways of extracting oils from plant material. The first is called cold pressing.
As the name implies, cold pressing is simply pressing the material under extreme pressure to extract the oil. This method is very effective at preserving the integrity and potency of the oil. That being said, it is a more expensive form of extraction.
Using solvents is the other, cheaper method of extracting oil from the raw materials. While cheaper, using solvents can reduce the effectiveness of the beard oil ingredients – solvents can damage/break down the oil’s molecules – and can leave impurities behind.
Shady cheap beard oil trick: using high concentrations of poor quality ingredients. Having a lot of sh*t in a product still makes it a sh*tty product.
There are hundreds of potential natural beard oil ingredients making for unlimited combinations. Of these hundreds, several lead the pack.
Jojoba Seed Oil - Jojoba is actually a vegetable wax. It is loaded with Omega-9 fatty acids which help protect and reinforce your skin. It also hydrates and improves the beard’s texture.
Argan Seed Oil - This is like the Swiss Army knife of oils. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, it hydrates both your skin and beard, fights irritation and encourages healthy beard growth. On top of that, it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Hemp Seed Oil - Hemp seed oil is a powerhouse ingredient. It strengthens both your skin and beard and has been shown to increase blood circulation to the hair follicles and encourage healthy beard growth. It's used to treat a variety of skin conditions including eczema.
Castor Seed Oil - High in ricinoleic acid. This bad boy reduces inflammation and fills in the scales on the hair shaft. Hello happy, healthy, fuller-looking beard.
Clary Oil - If you are like most men, you have oily skin. Clary oil is known to help regulate your face’s oil production. If you have oily skin, clary can help you achieve balance.
Eucalyptus Leaf Oil - We love eucalyptus because it’s antiseptic qualities helps keep your beard and the skin beneath fresh and clean. It also helps reduce the appearance of blemishes and fights irritation.
While these six oils are some of our favorite beard oil ingredients, it is important that you find a beard oil that contains ingredients that address your specific needs. If you are looking for a beard oil that addresses all of the concerns listed above, our Softening Beard Oil has you covered. If you are struggling with other issues, send us an email and we’ll get you pointed in the right direction!

1. Overnight Beard Mask
What it is: A beard mask is an intensive treatment for dry and damaged beards.
How to: Using your beard oil as a beard mask is super easy.
-Shower before bedtime and pat your beard dry
-Apply at least double the amount of beard oil you’d typically use
-Rinse out with cool water upon waking in the morning
2. Pre-Shave Oil
What it is: As the name implies, pre-shave oil is used before applying shaving cream/shaving.
Why should you use a pre-shave oil?
-Pre-shave oils provide protection against razor burn
-Pre-shave oils soften your stubble resulting in a smoother, more comfortable shave
-Pre-shave help “lift” the whiskers thereby promoting a closer shave
-Pre-shave oils moisturize your skin. Your face will feel soft and smooth after shaving
Can any beard oil be used as a pre-shave oil? Nope. Not all oils are created equal. Cheaper beard oils tend to clog your pores (and razor) when applied directly to the skin. Additionally, these oils can contain synthetic ingredients and fragrances that do not promote a smooth, close shave.
How to: Using your Softening Beard Oil as a pre-shave oil is as simple as one, two, three shave.
-Shower or rinse your face with warm water to open up your pores and towel dry
-Dispense a few pumps of beard oil into your hand, rub together and massage into the area to be shaved
-Apply shaving cream on top
-Shave as usual
3. Cuticle Oil
Say what now? We know, this might be a new one to you.
What it is: A cuticle oil is applied to your nails/skin resulting in softer, healthier and less brittle nails. If you work with your hands/wash them frequently, give this a try. You’ll find your nails catching on fabric far less and your cuticles will no longer be a flakey, white mess at the base of your nails.
How to: This is best done before bed.
-Wash and dry your hands
-Apply a few drops of beard oil and massage into your nails and skin
You’ll notice a difference the next morning, but for maximum benefit, consistency is key.
What it is: Personal care oil provides the same benefits to your pubic hair as it does your beard. You’ll find your pubic hair (and skin) softer, healthier and all around more pleasant. An added benefit is that our all-natural Softening Beard Oil has antimicrobial properties which help reduce the growth of odor-causing bacteria.
If you shave, applying beard oil after manscaping will help prevent ingrown hairs and soothe razor burn. And of course, it will make your skin silky smooth.
How to: Apply beard oil after manscaping. We recommend taking a warm shower before application.
-Take a warm shower and dry off
-Apply several pumps of beard oil to your hands and massage together*
-Massage beard oil into the freshly manscaped area
*The amount of beard oil to use is personal preference. Some guys prefer a very light coat, others like a heavier application due to the lubricating properties, as it helps to prevent against chafing.
Can any beard oil be used down there? Nope, especially if you are shaving. Cheap beard oils tend to include synthetic ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin. Beard oils containing fragrances should also be avoided. They can contain a whole list of less than desirable synthetic ingredients, and these questionable ingredients don’t need to be disclosed on the label. A lot of these fragrance ingredients contain alcohol which can cause a burning sensation on freshly groomed skin.
5. Hair Mask
What it is: A hair mask is a deep conditioning treatment that helps heal dry and damaged hair.
How to: This is best done before bed.
-Wash and towel dry your hair
-Dispense desired amount of beard oil into your hands and rub together
-Massage the oil into your hair, working it in root to tip
-For added effectiveness, wrap (or place) a warm towel over your hair to speed absorption
-Leave in for at least 20 minutes or sleep with it overnight
-When done, rinse out excess oil with cool water and towel dry
Organic/Chemical - Organic (carbon-based, also referred to as chemical) sunscreens absorb UV rays, transform and release them as heat. This prevents those rays from penetrating and damaging the skin. Examples of organic sunscreens include avobenzone, octisalate, and octinoxate.
Mineral - Mineral sunscreens form a physical barrier that reflects or scatters the UV radiation, preventing it from damaging the skin. Examples of mineral sunscreens include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
Since mineral sunscreens form a physical barrier on top of the skin, they are not ideal for men with facial hair. Since they sit on top of the skin, these types of sunscreens can leave a tinted residue in the beard. They also don't interact well with beard oils.
A properly formulated organic sunscreen quickly absorbs and is easily applied to the skin, beard, and scalp without leaving a greasy residue. They do interact well with beard oils.
